Built for the Journey You Are Already On
Bethune-Cookman University has always believed that education belongs to everyone — regardless of where you start, what you carry, or how long the road has been.
Start Your JourneyShe Built a University From $1.50 and a Dream
In 1904, Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune arrived in Daytona Beach, Florida with almost nothing — and a conviction that education could change everything. She founded the Daytona Literary and Industrial Training School for Negro Girls on faith, ingenuity, and an unshakeable belief that Black women and girls deserved access to the same future as anyone else.
Dr. Bethune was deeply inspired by Booker T. Washington's model at the Tuskegee Institute — a philosophy that education must be practical, self-sufficient, and rooted in the dignity of the student. In 1912, Washington himself visited Dr. Bethune's school, and in 1920 she attended a pivotal conference at the Tuskegee Institute that helped shape a national movement for Black women's civic and educational advancement. She carried that legacy forward into the institution that would become Bethune-Cookman University.
Her school merged with the Cookman Institute in 1923, becoming Bethune-Cookman College — and eventually the university that stands today. Every working adult who walks through our doors is walking the path she cleared.
The whole world opened to me when I learned to read.
Our Commitment to Military Students Didn't Start Today
Before there were military tuition benefits or veteran resource centers, Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune was fighting for the men and women who served. During World War II, she served as Special Assistant to the Secretary of War, as Assistant Director of the Women's Army Corps (WAC), and was named Honorary General of the Women's Army for National Defense. Her tireless advocacy led to approximately 6,500 African American women serving in the WAC — and she personally organized the first women's officer candidate schools in U.S. history.
